Hello Ad Club members,
Here is a photo of some dear friends reuniting at the wild, wooly, and wonderful Ad Club Newspaper Day event on October 9th. Sherri and Shadane hadn’t seen each other in 3 1/2 years and I was obviously feeling fairly blissful at our reunion. The concept of reconnection is germaine to the Ad Club’s mission; we exist, not just as a conduit to NABS donations and student scholarships, but to act as the connection point for those entering the industry and as a reconnection point for those separated from each other in this new hybrid work world.
The newly re-envisioned Newspaper Day event, News & Brews, offered many of those reconnections for me. As much as my working life now revolves around OOH, print will always be my first love and I was able to re-meet (and hug) many of the friends I’d made in that realm. It was also a true joy to watch an Ad Club event being so cleverly tweaked; legacy media like newspaper and OOH is often unfairly tarred with the label of obsolescence but this event’s untrivial trivia points made much of the direct link between turning to trusted news sources to eradicate misinformation. 90% of Canadians have admittedly fallen for fake news and so it stands to reason that, without these credible news providers, our democracy and, quite frankly, our collective intelligence is at stake.
In slightly less terrifying news, Ad Club’s next happening is our Halloween Party, ghoulishly going on at The Great Hall in Toronto on October 30th. Will you be there to reunite, reconnect…and perhaps ravenously feed in zombie guise?!
Yours in grotesque and goblin-esque gratitude,
Amanda Newell
